DAVID KAARSEMAKER, MFA '14, The Fragile Surface, Galerie St-Laurent+Hill
February 12 - 25, 2015
Reception: February 12, 20155 - 8 pm
The paintings in “The Fragile Surface” are made up of translucent images layered on to depictions of remembered rooms and houses. The glowing images act as frames through which the history of the painting is gradually obscured or revealed. I see these paintings as cross-sections in which the upper-most surface of immediate reality begins to disintegrate, revealing the entangled layers of images that structure the painting.
David Kaarsemaker was born in Chicago and grew up in British Columbia and Burkina Faso. He received his MFA from the University of Ottawa (2014) and his BFA from Concordia University (2004). He has exhibited across Canada, at venues including The Carleton University Art Gallery, Art Mûr, and Christina Parker Gallery.
