Originally from Montreal, Jennifer Macklem is an Associate Professor of Sculpture at the University of Ottawa, following a tenured position at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick.  In 2011 she was the Director of the Graduate Program in Fine Arts at the University of Ottawa.  While living and teaching in Paris in her early years, she completed her undergraduate studies at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts and at the Parson School of Design in France. She later completed her MFA at UQAM in Montreal.  She served as the director of the Parsons School of Design pre college summer program in France and taught with that institution for 6 years. She has also taught art in Pondicherry, India and British Columbia. For five years she served as Director/Curator or Chair of the Alternator Gallery for Contemporary Art, based in Kelowna, British Columbia.

Jennifer Macklem works with a range of artistic forms, producing sculpture, video, performances, installations, paintings, drawings and collaborative public art.

With a national and international exhibition record, her artistic practice is experimental in nature, and conceptually directed towards inclusiveness and participatory actions. Her recent work is an exploration into light as a sculptural medium, where she researches notions of the sacred and the profane.

Macklem explores connected themes involving biodiversity, nature, language, mystical traditions and materiality while developing site responsive working strategies. With her parallel video projects she works with narration, story telling, layering, hand drawing and stop animation. 

She is currently preparing a solo exhibition in 2013 for the Indrid Mueller: Art + Concepts Gallery in Fredericton, New Brunswick. In 2012 she participated in a thematic residency at the Banff Center for the Arts and presented exhibitions at The String Room Gallery in Aurora, New York  ( and at the Galway Arts Center in the Republic of Ireland. She recently completed a public art project for the Childrens’ Hospital of Eastern Ontario and presented a collaborative sculpture at the Taewha River Eco Art Festival in Ulsan, Korea. In 2010 she presented l’hiver: volet 1, a solo sculpture installation at Circa Gallery in Montreal. In 2008 she mounted a solo exhibition: our animal nature in a non-profit gallery in the UK. In 2007 and in 2011 her video animation work was screened in several US venues, including three in Los Angeles.
